Credibility of Scientists

Scientists must be held to a reasonable standard, in order for us to trust their work. Occasionally the work of a scientist, or group of scientists, comes into question. This article is about the work of some climate scientific studies being called to question.

For this project you should find some scientific discovery, link to the article and then write a paragraph that summarizes the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Next you should find and link to an article about a different point of view on the same subject. You should then write a paragraph about which point of view you believe and why. You should include information about how you have decided that one point of view is better supported than the other.

You may not use the article cited above as one of your links, but you may discuss the same topic.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 12/27. Remember that you need at least one project out of every two. If you did not do the previous one, you must do this one. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit.

If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com. Make sure that you tell me what your problem was, and you can include your completed project.

  1. Dinasaurs killed by asteroid?

This article is about how a massive asteroid impacted the earth cause massive devastation to all living things at that time. They believe this is what cause the extinction of the dinasaurs. It also cause the death of many other species living at that time.

    Or by volcano's?

This second article talks about how the dinasaurs were wiped out by volcanic activity. I believe that an asteroid was the major factor in the extinction of the dinasaurs and that volcanic activity was triggered by the asteroids impact. I believe this because we know a huge asteroid struck the earth but we dont know what caused the volcanic activity, and they both occurred close in time with each other.

  2. This article is about scientists who may have falsified data or exaggerated the data to prove a point. This article is also about how the scientists felt they were being unfairly treated by the media and that all of their data was considered false. These scientists are also receiving death threats for publishing their life’s work and data. Another problem arising from these articles is misquoting by the incorrect (deliberately or on accident) of (sic) because it can change the whole meaning of a sentence when used incorrectly.
to be credible or not to be credible that is the question…
For this project it was very hard to find a good recent article on scientists’ creditability so I used an older article from 2006. In my article describes the tough time that the journals that publish these scientists work have for detecting these errors in the scientists work. Over the years these journals have become more and more weary of new discoveries and theories made by unknown scientists. I suspect that in the future that it will be very hard for young not so well known scientists to publish their works and the only ones who will get their work published are scientists sponsored by the government or large wealthy corporations.

This article explains one theory about how the Earths moon was created. The "Giant impact" theory explaining the moon's formation was first proposed in the mid 1970s. It had many problems though which led scientists to continue research. One revision suggests that an impact occurred when Earth was only half formed. The issue is that the moon has almost no iron and the Earth has a lot. Where did all the iron go if this theory is correct? That is the question. The size of the impact object was about the size of mars. The impact sent tons of debris into space that came together to be the moon.

This page explains some other theories about how the moon was created. One theory suggests that gas and dust coalesced during the solar systems's formation. The second theory is the moon is simply a captured asteroid. The third theory says that when the Earth was first formed it was spinning too fast and it split into two pieces.
I believe the impact theory is correct, or at least the most correct. There has been more scientific work with this theory and not that much on the others. It just seems more supported than the other theories are.

  4. The extinction of dinosaurs is believed to be caused by an asteroid. Scientists think that so much dust was put into the air that it killed off the dinosaurs and other organisms. It killed other organisms too because it blocked the sunlight. This made it so that the other organisms couldn’t get light to grow.

    asteroids?

A different theory is just simply that the climate changed to quickly. It is believed to some that the climate either became cooler, dryer, or whatever, just different from what the dinosaurs were used to. Because it changed so quickly, dinosaurs were not able to adapt quick enough and died off.

  5. Asteroid

The article talks about an astroid that caused the extinction of the dinosoars. Scientists believe that the Chicxulub Crater provides evidence that the asteroid that created the crater caused the mass extinction of dinosoars and other species. The article provides evidence in that the asteroid impacting Earth caused many waves of problems that caused 90% of life within thousands of miles to die.

    Volcano

This article talks about how a volcano had caused the mass extinction of dinosoars and other species. Based on the two articles and my own knowledge of the extinction of the dinosoars I agree with the first article in that an asteroid caused the extinction of dinosoars. We know there is a large crater that was created from the impact of an asterioid that was believed to be created about the same time as the extinction of dinosoars. However there were volcanic eruptions that occured but they occured because of the asterioid.
