Chemistry Bites

This article describes how materials scientists are searching for new materials to replace dental filling or teeth.

First you should read the article and then, you should define these terms: This must be in your own words, and you cannot simply cut and paste from other sites of previous students work.
acid
amalgam
monomers
polymerization
van der Waals forces

Finally you should take a sentence that contains scientific terminology and explain its meaning. You should link to other websites, as needed, to explain each of the words. You should select a sentence that has terminology that is suited for this assignment. At least one website must be linked.

Make sure you put your ID and class section on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 2/21. Remember that you need at least one project out of every two. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit.

Want to improve your work? Read the guidelines for effective work and remember that spelling counts. Please do your project in a word processor and then cut and paste it into the comment box. Sloppy work really doesn't save you time, and it there are glaring spelling errors you will lose credit.

If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com. Make sure that you tell me what your problem was, and you can include your completed project.

  1. Acid - a substance with a sour taste, that reacts with bases to make salts and has a pH of less than 7.

Amalgam - an alloy of mostly mercury and some other metals that is used as a dental filling.

Monomer - A molecule that can combine with others of the same kind to form a polymer.

Polymerization - The bonding of two or more monomers to form a polymer.

Van der Waals forces - weak attractive forces between molecules that happen between neutral atoms and molecules due to their electric charge.

    Original sentence in scientific terms;
The bonding agent, consisting of light-curable methacrylates and dimethacrylates, can then be applied, before application of the resin composite itself.

    Translated into English;
The material used to make bond two different things together, made up of the salts or esters of methacrylic acid that can be removed by the use of light, can then be applied, before application of the of a cheap adhesive used in dentistry.

For the translations I mostly used wikipedia.com and dictionary.com.

  2. Acid- a substance with a sharp sour taste like vinegar and has a ph value less than seven. Acids can react with bases.

Amalgam- a mixture or combination. An alloy of mercury with tin or silver. Mercury and silver is used in dental fillings.

Monomers- Molecules that react with similiar low weight molecules to form a compound with a higher molecular weight.

Polymerization-the process that combines monomers to make a compound with high molecular weight.

Van der Waals forces- weak electrical forces that attract neutral molecules to other neutral molecules in gases, liquids, and solids

    Scientific sentence:
'We start with polypropylene glycol and attach short polylactide oligomers to this'.

    Translation:
We start with a plastic like compound with a high molecular weight that includes carbon and hydrogen and a colorless sweet liquid and attach this to a substace that is made of synthesized corn starch and a molecule that contains a few monomers ( Molecules that react with similiar low weight molecules to form a compound with a higher molecular weight)

  3. Acid- A chemical compound that when dissolved in water gives a solution a pH less than 7.0.

Amalgam- Most commonly used dental restorative material used for dental fillings.

Monomers- A small molecule that may become chemically bonded to other monomers to form a polymer.

Polymerization- Is a process of reacting monomer molecules together in a chemical reaction to form polymer chains.

Van der Waals forces- The attractive or repulsive force between molecules other than those due to covalent bonds.

Original Sentence: Van Meerbeek says. 'It would have a functionality to allow ionic bonding with the calcium of the hydroxyapatite, and a polymerisable functionality at the other end.

Translated Sentence: It would have the quality of being functional to allow a type of chemical bonding that involves a metal and a nonmetal ion with the calcium of the naturally occurring mineral form of calcium apatite and polymerization at the other end.

  4. Acid: A compound that has a sharp or bitter taste and has a pH value less than 7.

Amalgam: An alloy that consists mainly of silver mixed with mercury and wavering amounts of other metals and is used as a dental filling.

Monomers: A molecule of low molecular weight capable of reacting with identical or different molecules of low molecular weight to form a polymer.

Polymerization: The process or means of forming a polymer or polymeric compound.

Van der Waals forces: Weak attraction, nonspecific forces between molecules.

    Scientific level:
The hardening, or polymerization, of the monomer once in the mouth is usually induced using blue light to excite a polymerization, (such as camphorquinone) contained within the mixture. The initiator first reacts with an amine, also present in the mixture, forming a pair of free radicals

    Translation:
The hardening of the formation of a polymeric compound once in the mouth is normally made using a blue light to cause the formation of a polymerization contained within the mixture. The initiator first reacts with a class of compounds derived from ammonia, also present in the mixture. This forms a pair of free radicals.
