Element creation Research

Superheavy Element 114 Confirmed

For this project you should start by reading the article that discusses the man made creation of an element. Normally it takes the power of a star to create new elements, but we have figured out a way to do it.

Then write a paragraph that summarizes the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

By the creation of new elements we have expanded our understanding of the nature of the chemical world.

The final part is to find an article or web site about any other topic related to ways we have expanded our knowledge about chemistry or the periodic table and link to it. Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in your article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 10/11. If you did not do the last project you are required to do this one. If you do both projects one will count for extra credit. If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  1. Element 114 was made by the National Laboratory, it has been called the super heavy element. New elements normally have been produced inside of stars. So it is a rare accurence that man made an element.

    Scientists have been discovering and charaterising elements since the 1700s. They tried to make sensce of the very large variety of elements. Each element has distict properties and features which makes them all unique.

  2. American Scientists were able to confirm the man made production of the "superheavy" element 114. First artificially made by Russian Scientists 10 years ago there is no current known stable isotope of this radioactive element. Even though the 2 samples created by the American scientists lasted less than one second much valuable information was gained from this experiment. More recent studies suggest that the infamous "Island of Stability" extends to 120 or even to 126 raising many questions on how long the island extends out.

    Creation of 118?

    Researchers from the United States and Russia claimed they have created the "superheavy" element 118. This is the first "noble" gas created artificially in a lab and if confirmed would be placed under radon on the periodic table of elements. This element was created for only a millisecond before decaying into 114 then 112 and finally spliting in half. These same scientists claimed earlier this this decade that they had created the element only to withdraw that claim a few years later. This was due to much scrutiny and charges of falsified data and the firing of a scientist. To help the confirmation of this element the scientists were closely monitored and there are no none falsified data in this experiment.

  3. Scientists have recently discovered and confirmed the production of the superheavy element 114. One of the members in the group that discovered the element says, "this proves that the most interesting superheavy elements can in fact be made in the laboratory." Superheavy element 114 being made by man is unusual since new elements tended to be made from stars. The article talks of scientists in the late 1950's that calculated that superheavy elements are arranged with certain combinations of protons and nuetrons. The article also explains how the scientists achieved their discorvery by using a machine called a BGS.

    Organic Solar Cells

    This article talks about inexpensive solar cells vastly improving medical imaging techniques aswell as lighter more flexible television screen are some of the uses envisioned for organic electronics. Also, this new discovery will being insights into the way molecules absorb and move energy. The article talks of how scientists found that the ultrafast movement through and between molecules occurs by a quantum-mechanical mechanism instead of occuring at random. This discorvery is useful because most scientists believed these effects could only operate in complex systems at low temperatures.

  4. A new element, element 114, has been made in a gas-filled separator. This is a huge step in science because it has been figured out how to make an element without the power equivalent to that of a star. This is a step in science that has been attempted for many years.

  5. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory discovered the production of superheavy element 114. This is a key part in a nuclear science journey called the "Island of Stability." It is a big discovery because a lot of elements are not man made and are instead usually produced inside of stars. The discovery of 114 has been a long time coming and it was a delicate and complicated process to produce.

    Periodic Table

    Demetri Mendeleev was the first scientist to create a period table to help predict characterizations of new elements. He organized the elements by atomic weight to show patterns. Today's periotic table was adopted from Mendeleev's but was changed in 1914 by Henry Moseley, who learned you can experimentally determine the atomic numbers of elements.

  6. After many years of study, researchers have been able to create a new superheavy element, element 114. With the use of a Gas- filled separator the researchers were able to create 2 different nuclei of element 114. Before this element was created scientist were still wondering if superheavy element were real. To create superheavy elements requires one element at a man made element.

    New Class Of Catalysts

    Researchers at Arizona State University have designed and created a new important material that can be used a catalysts. This new special material can handle larger molecules then the normal catalysts. With this new advancement we can now isolate and modify molecules that we were unable to to do before. The new material is formed from a zinc oxide and terephtalic acid. The problem with previous attempts were that the framework was unstable but they made this one so it has double bond linking the organic acid to the zinc oxide.

  7. The creation of superheavy element 114 was confirmed after Russia found it 10 years ago. By using a BGS they found out that there are 2 nuclei with 114 protons but different numbers of neutrons and time of decaying. Because this new element is higher than 92 it is radioactive. Element 114 has a small cross section of only 2.

    Element 112 is official now and just needs a name. Now element 112 is the heaviest element on the periodic table, 277 times heavier than hydrogen. This is the 6th element discovered by GSI. Element 112 is created through a merging of zinc and lead.

  8. Scientists have recently been able to create a new element called element 114. This element is superheavy and was created with a cyclotron. This device shoots one type of atom at another type of atom with the hopes of making new elements. Only two nuclei of element 114 were made in eight days of running the cyclotron.

    This article explains that scientists are going to add a new superheavy element to the periodic table. The element is 277 times heavier than hydrogen and is the heaviest element on the periodic table. The new element is made with a particle excelerator. The name of the element is not known yet.

  9. 10 years ago, a group of scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna claimed to have created a new, super heavy element. Recently, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory removed any doubts about the validity of the Dubna group’s claims by successfully re-creating the super heavy element now known as element 114. This is a very important discovery for science because scientists all over the world were beginning to doubt the existence of super heavy elements. Although the scientists were able to make the element it only existed for less than a second before decaying.

  10. Neurons communicate with each other, and when this communication is interrupted it can cause many diseases and or mental disorders. Recently a new advanced method for nano-scale imaging has been discovered. This hopefully will add to our understanding of diseases of the nervous system and viral infections. It also could be useful in helping us develop cures for many common neurological diseases and mental disorders.
