Single molecule's stunning image

Atoms and molecules are extremely small, much smaller than can be seen in the best microscopes available.

For this project you should start by reading this article that discusses the first real image of a molecule. Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences. For this article, you should know that a carbon nanotube is carbon atoms linked together, like a piece of rolled up chicken wire.

Then you should find an article about any other topic related to ways to visualize atoms or molecules, or material about their size and/or shape and link to it. Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 9/27. Remember, you are required to do either this project or the one that will come next. If you do both, one will count for extra credit. If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  1. This article shows the first advanced picutre of a real molecule. Scientists have developed a new method to show the actual chemical bonds of a molecule. Also the figured a way of measure a single charge of an atom.

  2. This article shows the first picture of molecule. The picture even shows the chemical bonds of the carbon nanotube, which is a brand new development. Scientists developed a device that has to be kept at freezing temperatures. The microscope also has to be kept in a vacume. This can help making new drugs and electronics.
    Atoms

    This article shows a picture of individual atoms. A new microscope was developed to take this picture and it is a very clear picture. The atoms are silicon atoms. Normally silicon atoms aren't red but the scientists added the color to them.

  3. The article shows how scientists were able to see the chemical structure of molecules and get a picture of it for the first time. The IBM scientists had to keep the microscope cold at all times and it had to be under high vacuum.It had to be kept in them conditions so gases wouldn't get in there and mess up the molecule.

    nanotech microscope

    That article shows how the U.S. Department of Energy was developing a microscope that would see tiny particles. It was a $100 million project to make a microscope that could captures images half a angstrom or half the size of a hydrogen atom. That microscope was very important because it would really help scientists be able to go further in nanotech research and development.

  4. This article is explaining how an AFM was used to see a clearer image of a single molecule of carbon. A prong like instrument vibrates the tinniest bit when it gets close to the molecule. Because of how delicate this procedure is, the experiment must stay in a vacuum and in extremely cold temperatures. With these new advances scientist are thinking that they may be able to see what a single atom is made of specifically

  5. This article shows the first image of a molecule. It was taken by using a fork like device, in a freezing cold, vacume environment, that measures the frequency of the two prongs on the device. As the frequency bounces off the molecule it will cause change and the device reads that change and puts out a image from it. This image will help the advancement of nano-technology in the future and help our understanding of chemistry.

    This article shows images of the atomic structure of a activated carbon molecule. The article describes that they use a aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy to capture the image of the active carbon molecule. Before these studies the structure of carbon was completely unknown and ever changing but thanks to this, they are getting closer to the true image. It describes the carbon as in sequences a pentagonal rings which helps explain the properties of it.
