Laser Coolong of Gases

Read this article about cooling gases. It seems that scientists have figured out a way to almost instantly cool gases, almost like a "microwave refrigerator." Then write a paragraph that summarized the article. Paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Then you should find an article about any other topic related to:
1. How light is produced. or
2. Properties of gases. or
3. Heat. or
4. Phases of matter.

and link to it. Finally write a paragraph summarizing the material in that article. Again, paragraphs should be at least three well constructed sentences.

Make sure you put your ID on your work. This project is due by midnight Sunday, 11/8. Remember, you are required to do either this project or the one that will came previously. If you do both, one will count for extra credit. If you did not do one on DHMO you are required to so this one. If you have problems, email me at aphsbio at gmail.com.

  1. Recently scientists at the Bonn University in Germany were able to successfully demonstrated a method for cooling gases by "laser bombardment". Instead of using the conventional red light method used in previous tests, scientists used a more powerful blue light method in which an electron switches its orbit to something further away. Then this electron collides with the atoms using up the atom's kinetic energy thus making it cooler. The scientists speculate this technology could be later used in new mini fridge models further down the road.

a laser that outputs one pentawatt of energy???!?

Recently scientists at The University of Texas in Austin created the highest powered laser which can produce one pentawatt of energy (which is one quadrillion watts). The laser creates more than 2,000 times the output of tall the power plants in the United States. This will allow scientists to create mini supernovas and high density plasmas. The laser will also help scientists study how to create energy by controlled fusion.

  2. This article explains on how American and Finnish came up with a powerful method of cooling gases by “laser bombardment”. It has been demonstrated to actually work and may be used for mini fridges in the future. Scientists came up with this by doing an experiment a completely new principle of cooling gases. They altered atoms orbits around the nucleus which changed the light they gave off.

    Gases

This article describes the properties of gases. Like all substances exhibit in the gas phase but molar volumes of solids and liquids differ from one substance to another. Also unlike liquids and solids gases occupy space uniformly and completely and since the molecules are farther apart than liquids and solids they are easier to compress.

  4. In recent studies scienstist have found a new principle to cooling. They used the property that atoms can be simulated by light, which shows an electron changes its orbit so that it is further away. This is only sucsessful if it has the right color. For Example Red light has less Energy then a blue light. The Normal method is using the red light, this one uses blue light. Which makes the energy lower and make it cooler.

Light is produced when emitting engery is transmitted at a wavelength determined by the forces acting on it, What we can see is called light. The amount of visable light determines the color of light that we see. There are some types of light that are not visable to the human eye.

  5. Scientists have recently demonstrated that atoms can be stimulated by light in a process called "laser bombardment". This new process could possibly lead to a new kind of mini fridges. The idea was developed in 1978 but the experiments then were not successful. An electron when stimulated changes to a different orbit si it is farther away. In order for this to happen blue light needs to be used which has more energy than red light.

This article is a basic explanation of the phases of matter. The different phases of matter define the different forms in which matter exists. Solids have molecules that are tight to eachother and gasses have molecules in random motion.

  6. Scientists in have discovered a way to cool gases at a very rapid speed. Using a method called “Laser

Bombardment” gases cool very quickly. This method is the exact opposite of a microwave. In the future

Laser Bombardment could be used to construct mini fridges to cool anything that is put into them.

  7. American and Finnish scientists came up with a new principle for cooling gases called, "Laser bombardment". For testing this principle scientists used the property that atoms can be stimulated by light. In the past tests scientists used what is called as the red light method however scientists now use a blue light method in which the atoms orbits were changing around a nucleus, this change altered the light the atoms gave off. This blue light method uses lower energy which makes it cooler. This recent discovery can be used to build mini-fridges to cool down what is put inside them.

    Properties of gases

Gases have three charecteristic properties in that they are easy to compress, they expand to fill their containers and they occupy more space than the liquids or solids from which they form. Unlike liquids or solids gases occupy there containers randomly and completley. Molecules in a gas are far apart which makes it easier to compress a gas than a liquid.

  8. This is article is showing that what was created by American and Finnish, 3 decades ago, actually works. They have proved that the method of cooling gases actually works. They use color though to cool the gas. They have shown that red light is better because it has less energy. So it makes the atoms move less making it easier for it to cool.

    creating natural gases

This article is showing that some of the oils and gases that we get from the earth can actually be made with chemical reactions. It is showed that this belief was created in 1877 by Dimitri Mendeleev. It is shown that with the right chemical reactions creates methane. Methane is the main ingredient in natural gases. It shows that we can make our own natural gases by making methane.
